Masterclass Emotional Expression

Transdisciplinary Acting Workshop

This master class deals with Samuel´s specialty: The artist´s work with real emotions. We will pay attention to both theory and practice, investigating the physiology of emotions and their application to artistic interpretation. We will work with classical methods and contemporary techniques, most of the latter developed by Samuel in the course of his research work.

Artists of all disciplines (acting, dance, music, visual arts, etc.) are welcome, performers as well as directors and also therapists or others interested in emotional work. No previous experience required.

Director

Samuel Núñez is a theatre director and teacher specialized in physical theatre, transdiscipline, theatre anthropology and emotional expression. For more than 25 years he has been exploring and developing techniques for the direction and training of artists. One of his main focuses are methods which enable artists to connect authentically with their creative source, their co-artists and those experiencing their art. At present he mainly works in Barcelona, Berlin and the area of Cologne (Germany).

And which is our own way towards the sun?
 
In this Project, the group will elaborate a performance based on the play "Roberto Zucco" by Bernard-Marie Koltès directed by Samuel. We will play with styles and forms such as realism, surrealism, expressionism, physical theatre and butoh and bring them together in a transdisciplinary context.
 
The preparatory work on the performance will take place from home before the Barcelona workshop. Samuel will lead an active exploration of the basic text and work on first ideas for staging. This will mainly be realized via e-mail. 
 
The project is open to persons with and without experience in performing arts, like theatre, dance, music, acrobatics.

The Poetry of Silence

A transdisciplinary arts workshop in the middle of nature

An exploration of creativity through silence. In the beautiful environment of "Geode Art Space" we will approach in a different ways a state of silence in which poetry - in the sense of creative expression - can arise in a very natural way. It is a very active and authentic state of presence in this very moment. Here, one is naturally connected with an inexhaustible source of creativity which now flows freely manifesting what we call the poetry of silence. We do not refer to silence as an intellectual or religious concept, but a state of being that can actually be experienced and trained. It is a way of working and a path towards transcending art. Art becomes the vehicle of a journey in which deep connection and true transformation can occur - in the artists themselves as well as those experiencing their art.

This workshop is open to artists from all fields (theater, dance, painting, plastic art, literature, music, audio-visual arts etc.) and other interested persons. No physical condition or prior knowledge is necessary.

Accomodation

The workshop will take place on the grounds of Geode Art Space in Navata/Girona, near Figueres. Participants can bring a camping tent to put it in the outdoor space that is large and has many shady places. There are also several places available to sleep in the new studio, bringing a mat and sleeping bag. The accommodation price includes breakfast (Saturday, Sunday) and one lunch (Saturday). The other meals (snacks, dinner) are organized individually or together. There is a kitchen available for us.

How to arrive
  • By car (if you want to share your car, you can let us know).
  • By train to Figueres Vilafant, then continue by public transport to Geode Art Space.

Are we waiting? And if so, what for - and how?
Do we have any time left to wait?
And what if we just stopped waiting?
 
In this Project, the group will elaborate a performance based on the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett directed by Samuel. We will play with styles and forms such as realism, surrealism, expressionism, physical theatre and butoh and bring them together in a transdisciplinary context.
 
The preparatory, non-local, work on the performance will take place before the Barcelona workshop. Samuel will lead an active exploration of the basic text and work on first ideas for staging. This will mainly be realized via e-mail. 
 
The project is open to persons with some (or more) experience in performing arts, for example theatre, dance, music, acrobatics.

The Poetry of Silence

Physical Theatre Workshop in the Forest of Strausberg

During this workshop we will explore the potential of silence and movement for the expression of intuitive creativity. We will use the exterior ambients of the community project ANDERE WELT in the forest of Strausberg to let ourselves be inspired by their different atmospheres. In this encounter with nature and with ourselves it is possible to discover a very primal and poetic body language.

Accomodation

The workshop will take place on the grounds of the community project ANDERE WELT in the forest of Strausberg near Berlin. 

Most of the workshop will be held "open air", but there is also a interior working space of booked for us. Lovely, simple 2 and 4 bed rooms are available for accommodation as well as shared bathrooms and other community rooms. Catering will be organized by the participants themselves.

In Emotion

Physical Theatre Workshop

This workshop is fully dedicated to Samuel's specialty: working with real emotions. We will devote ourselves primarily to the basic emotions in order to finally approach even more complex emotional states. In contrast to many others in this field, the techniques practiced do not rely on the personal life story of the actors, but take their starting point in working directly with body and consciousness. Exercises from transdisciplinary body theater, which were developed by Samuel himself in the course of his research, will structure the workshop. They will also give us a taste of how authentically experienced emotions can become a valuable tool of artistic expression. All the same, the workshop is explicitly open to people without artistic ambitions. 

Participants with and without experience in this field or in the field of theater are welcome. During this workshop, they can get to know working with authentic emotions or deepen their experience and refine the application in detail.
